About Vicara’s Wrath
When a vile necromancer abducts an entire village of frontier folk with the aid of monstrous creatures, it falls on a pair of unlikely companions to rescue them. In order to hunt down the necromancer, a zealous gun-toting warrior priestess named Hope forms a delicate alliance with Hadrin, a gentleman mage with ambitions as big as his ego. Among the kidnapped villagers, young Nora must find the courage to oppose her dreaded captor while trying to keep as many of her kith alive as possible while the necromancer plies his dark arts. Vicara’s Wrath is a Gaslamp fantasy with Western and Steampunk influences.

After reading Matthew C Stinson's first novel Graves Pact(the only book I got on Kindle Unlimited and subsequently bought outright), I've been eagerly awaiting his next book.Although not a continuation of the first urban fantasy, Vicara's Wrath is set in a steampunk alternate world whose wilderness is crawling with monsters.
My initial thoughts were that this was like Sapkowski's Witcher universe.
It was a well paced, well written story that really sucked me in.
The two primary characters, Hope a devout monster hunting inquisitor type and Hadrin, a well bred if somewhat impoverished gentleman Mage were really great counter points to each other.
Hope was battle hardened but ignorant of magic, whereas Hadrin was moderately well versed in magic but not monsters.
They were both well fleshed out and interesting and as I mentioned, they were a good team.
The magic deserves a mention as I found it fairly unusual. Instead of the usual mage who does as they please, the magic system here was more like a new branch of physics. For example, increasing the gravity in a small area to slow down a monster drained it from the area around it. Or, a fire spell using the casters own body heat because the ambient heat was insufficient for a fire spell.
This was pretty unique and I really found myself liking this approach as it added alot to the story.
The only real con I can think of is that the antagonist was a little one dimensional as the 'cold, evil guy'.
Still, this book was one that I just sped through and I loved it all.
If you like fantasy like Sanderson, Butcher or Sapkowski then you will definitely love this one!
It was a very rare 10/10 from me.

Vicara Wrath Cardinal Eight Book 1 eBook Matthew Stinson Dusan Markovic Reviews
Fantastic book - I read through it yesterday, unable to put it down. It was pretty much the full package for me characters that I could get attached to, compelling storytelling with descriptors that draw you into the world, and a plot that kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering how the heroes would succeed. Despite the book being somewhere in the realm of fantasy, everything was so well thought out and each and every consequence to an action felt realistic. My favourite part was the lack of a romantic subplot (what a breath of fresh air). Even if one was introduced later one, I'm so, so glad there wasn't one now. Absolutely refreshing. I eagerly await a sequel - there's still so much more about the characters and the world I'd like to know. I'm so glad I decided to give it a shot.
Vicara's Wrath is an action packed fantasy novel that I couldn't put down. From the moment I read the first page, I was hooked and never once lost interest. The characters are so interesting and full of dimension, and the plot is incredibly well thought out. The dynamics between Hadrin and Hope are so much fun, (especially their bantering), and I really enjoyed being a part of the journey that threw them together. If you want a book that has interesting characters you want to know more about, a plot that is full of adventure, and disappear into a world jam packed with magic and intrigue then definitely read this book. You will not be disappointed. I can't wait to see where the author takes this series, and I will be anxiously waiting for the next installment.
This story takes place in an old world where medieval tradition slams into the progression of aesthetic technology. A world of strong metropolis's and unexplored mythical frontiers. A word of the esoteric, of secrets, and of danger.
It is in this well thought out and engaging world that we find the tale of two heroes on their own quests who find common cause when they discover an evil to vile to ignore.
Stinson does a great job of creatively mapping out a story that is wrought with lovable characters, vile creatures, and a world that is dense and diverse. Smooth writing makes for getting a good grasp from the first page and engaging storytelling keeps the reader moving from chapter to chapter without wanting to put the book down.
Pretty cool story. Stinson is an author worth looking for. Great magic in the book, some stunning action at times and I truly enjoy the adventure the character went on. Villain was a little on the line, but I dug his evil nature.
I found the character relationship dynamic in this novel to be refreshing avoiding the usual tropes of two beautiful strangers meet get on each others nerves but approximately a hundred pages in discover they are falling in love. Avoiding that tired plot point alone was two stars. Besides the excellent characters you have a world that consists of magic, guns, trains, swords and all kinds of other interesting creatures. I found this to be a interesting world it reminds me of US history in the 1800s back east had inovations and out west was the wild lands with modern standards yet to take hold. I look forward to the next novel if I had one suggestion to the author it would be to also keep readers notifed via with a page link. I mostly get my updates that way and after reading this book that is the first place I went for news of a sequel.
